Walter Dean Myers: honor this great writer's memory and give one of his books ... - The Oregonian

Walter Dean Myers, a great American writer, died July 1. He was 76. Myers wrote more than 100 books; most were for children and young adults but all could be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys a good story.

His list of honors is long, a full obituary only begins to do him justice. The best tribute to him would be to read one of his novels, "Monster" or "Fallen Angels" or "Autobiography of My Dead Brother." When you're done, give one to a boy or a young man you know. He'll love them. People always talk about how it's hard to get boys to read, yet I've never known a kid who didn't like these books. They're intense, they're not easy, but neither is life.
