If you’re fan of “The Notebook,” you might be shocked to learn that former lovebirds Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams once disliked each other.
With the popular romantic drama recently celebrating its 10th anniversary on June 25, “Notebook” director Nick Cassavetes shared some memories from the set in an interview with VH1 — including some surprising behavior from the two leads.
Cassavetes said that the “Notebook” co-stars, whose romantic chemistry onscreen propelled the movie into a commercial blockbuster, didn’t get along offscreen. He shared a story from the set in which the tension between them was so high that Gosling didn’t even want to film with his leading lady.
“Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick come here,’” the director recalled. “And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.’”
Cassavetes said he took his stars aside and attempted to mediate their disagreement, which initially led to them “screaming and yelling at each other.” Eventually, Gosling and McAdams were able to work out their differences.
“I walked out,” he said. “I smoked a cigarette and everybody came out like, “All right let’s do this.” And it got better after that, you know? They had it out … I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open. The rest of the film wasn’t smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing.”
Despite the on-set tension, Cassavetes praised “The Notebook” stars for their talent and dedication to their roles.
“They were committed to their characters and both of them are terrific artists in their own right. Really, really top-notch artists,” he said. “I would love to work with them (again).”
After co-starring in “The Notebook,” Gosling and McAdams dated for four years and split in 2007.
