Shia LaBeouf got surprisingly candid with Ellen DeGeneres about his recent troubles.

The talk show host asked the 28-year-old actor about his strange behavior over the past year, and he owned up to his past mistakes and even apologized.

LaBeouf, who appeared on Friday’s show to promote his World War II drama “Fury,” described the events of the past year as part of an “existential crisis, which turned into some kind of exploration.”

“I had some hiccups, some judgment errors,” he added.

One of those “hiccups” was wearing a paper bag over his head at the premiere of his movie “Nymphomaniac” in February. The movie star had written “I AM NOT FAMOUS ANYMORE” on the bag.

DeGeneres, who said she hadn’t paid attention to LaBeouf’s tribulations over the past few months, expressed her surprise for that bizarre act as well as his performance art piece, held in Los Angeles later that month.

LaBeouf stunned the comedian when he described the event, which included him sitting in a room with a bag over his head, and a table that had different “implements,” including an “Indiana Jones” whip and pliers, with the idea that people could come in and “do whatever they wanted” with him.

But once he explained his intentions behind the strange project, DeGeneres seemed impressed.

“There was a lot of negativity online,” the “Transformers” star explained. “So I thought alright, well let’s see what all this negativity is all about. Let’s invite it in.”

“I was sort of like apologizing to the public in a way,” he continued. “So I thought for sure people were gonna come in and be super mean from what I’d been reading.

“But it wasn’t that way at all; it was very human. Once they got in there everything changed. They stopped looking at me as like an object (and) they started looking at me as like a human.”

DeGeneres commended him for his bravery, especially since many people that say negative things “are the cowards and chicken people that just stay there behind their keyboards.”

LaBeouf reasoned that the same thing that made him pursue an acting career also motivated the negative online commenters.

“I got into this industry cause I had this void … so I thought being good at being an actor would somehow fill that void. And like you know, a lot of entertainers (are) this way, and so I think people just really want to make a mark.

“So people online making the comments just want to make a mark. So I think we suffer from the same thing, which is just a lack of attention and love.”

“Well said,” DeGeneres replied as the audience applauded.

The talk show host then asked him about what got him to stop his attention-seeking behavior.

“Jail,” the actor said. “Jail was quite scary.”

LaBeouf was referring to the brief time he spent behind bars in June after disrupting a performance of the Broadway musical “Cabaret.” (Last month he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and agreed to get treatment for substance abuse.)

While the star said it wasn’t his first time in jail, he said it was “the worst time” and “very, very scary.” He also revealed that “they put a Hannibal mask on me” for spitting on a cop.

“I’m sorry if you’re watching dude,” he added. “I’m sorry. That was crazy, man.”

DeGeneres also asked LaBeouf about his mother Shayna, and the star said that she was helping as he was trying to change his past behavior.

While he admitted that he hadn’t always listened to her in the past since he is an only child and “quite stubborn,” LaBeouf said that due to his mother, “now I am on the right path.”

“Thank you, Mom,” he added, blowing a kiss to the camera.
