Amanda Bynes’ family was able to bring her back to L.A. with the help of an unlikely ally – Sam Lutfi.
The controversial figure, best known as the ex-manager of Britney Spears, convinced the troubled star to fly back home, where she then taken into a psychiatric hold, according to TMZ.
Lutfi reportedly talked the “Easy A” actress into suing her parents, and suggested she return to L.A. so he could set up a meeting between her and a lawyer.
The site goes on to claim that Lutfi had planned the ruse with Bynes’ parents, and detailed how they were able to pull it off.
He reportedly told the actress that their car would make two stops: first as a lawyer’s office in Pasadena and then the London Hotel, where Bynes could meet with her parents and inform them about the lawsuit.
But the lawyer’s office was actually a Pasadena hospital, and when Bynes entered the building, she was placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold.
A family source confirmed to the Daily News that lawyer Tamar Arminak was able to intercept Bynes after her flight from New York as part of a surprise intervention. The actress will be held for 72 hours, and the hold can be extended for up to two weeks.
The chain of events was preceded by Bynes’ Twitter tirade on Friday, in which she alleged sexual abuse at the hands of her father, then later blamed making those claims on a “microchip” in her brain.
After she rescinded her allegations, she tweeted Lufti, with the actress expressing her trust in Spears’ ex-associate.
“You feel like a brother to me @samlutfi i mean it. Thank you luvvv,” the star tweeted Friday afternoon.
Lufti himself tweeted a message that indicated he was part of the ruse to bring Bynes back home.
“Thanks Richard @famousrichard @PerezHilton. She's in good hands now. Many thanks to all those that helped along the way #getwellAB,” he wrote Friday.
If Lutfi had a hand in helping the Bynes family, his actions were vastly different from his alleged actions when he was Spears’ manager for several months in 2007, during a very troubled time that eventually saw her placed in a psychiatric hold in January 2008.
In her 2008 book, “Through the Storm,” the pop star’s mother wrote that Lutfi was a “Svengali” who cut Spears off from her family and ground up pills to put in her food.
He filed a lawsuit against Spears’ parents alleging libel and breach of contract, but the suit was dismissed in 2012.
