Spy organization on 'Archer' will no longer be called ISIS - TheCelebrityCafe.com

The FX show Archer is trying to quietly remove any references to ISIS from the series in light of recent events.

The animated comedy about a spy agency revolves around an organization known as ISIS (International Secret Intelligence Service). But when another, very unfunny ISIS began popping up in the news, the creators of the show were left trying to figure out how the show should deal with this.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, creator Adam Reed revealed that the show was quietly getting rid of the name ISIS.

Reed said that they were able to do this organically in the show via a merger with the CIA, and the creative team then went back and painted out ISIS logos from the show. The season six premiere of Archer will also feature a quick shot of movers hauling away the ISIS sign.

Some fans were expecting the show to make some sort of meta reference to this issue, maybe with Archer's ISIS complaining that another group stole their name. But Reed said this scene of the ISIS logo being moved will be the only reference to this in the show, and that the characters just won't use the name ISIS anymore.

The season premiere also features a new scene of Malory explaining to Archer that the CIA now controls them. This scene, in addition to the moving sign scene, was absent from the episode when it was aired at Comic-Con this past summer.

Although ISIS is quietly being dropped from the show, Reed said the name will still appear in the first five seasons. The team won't be pulling a George Lucas and digitally altering the older episodes to rename ISIS.

Now FX also has to deal with all the ISIS merchandise they have. FX used to sell hats, cups, and T-shirts all with the ISIS logo on them, but these items are no longer sold in the FX store, according to The Guardian. Reed joked that this merchandise will probably all end up in a landfill somewhere.

Archer will return with its sixth season in January 2015.
