So much for diversity.
With David Muir taking over from Diane Sawyer on ABC’s “World News” in September, the face of the three network news evening newscasts will be the same as they did for decades: three white men.
When Katie Couric took over as the anchor of “The CBS Evening News” in 2006, she was heralded — and rightly so — a pioneer following in the footsteps of other female evening news trailblazers like Barbara Walters and Connie Chung.
Walters and Chung had to share the spotlight with men, but when Couric and Sawyer got the chair to themselves, it was believed that a diverse new era in network news had begun.
Now we’re back to square one — and it’s not just the evening news.
In April, CBS blew a historic chance to change late night television when it named Stephen Colbert as David Letterman’s replacement on “The Late Show,” keeping late night TV hosted by three white men.
Like Muir, Colbert earned the job with his talent and skill, but these kind of high profile jobs don’t open up very often. The chance to be a gamechanger happens so rarely. Someone needs to get on it.
