It’s Lesson #1 in celebrity media strategy: Don’t compare anything to rape except actual rape. Charlize Theron didn’t get the memo.
Trying to promote her “A Million Ways to Die in the West” comedy in Britain, she’s instead fending off Twitter-fueled outrage over her remark comparing intrusive media coverage to rape.
In an interview with Sky News, she was asked if she ever Googles herself. “I don’t do that, so that’s my saving grace. When you start living in that world, and doing that, you start I guess feeling raped.”
Well, no, not really, responded the Twitterverse.
Phil ~ DeorumFifa @DeorumFifa : “Charlize Theron says press intrusion is comparable to rape. Braindead.”
Bev Jackson @Bevo3 : “#charlizetheron how stupid to comment about press intrusion the same as being raped. Makes my blood boil!! @SkyNews “
Alicia Holland @aliciajane5 : “Can’t believe Charlize Theron would say something so stupid and ridiculous. What an idiot.”
Kristen Stewart made a similar comment in 2010 — comparing paparazzi pursuit of her to being raped — and provoked similar ire. She ended up apologizing.
And just this week Gwyneth Paltrow stepped into a similar mess when she compared the many online attacks on her to being a soldier in a war zone. Which led to more online attacks.
