Memphis, Tennessee, United States (4E) – Jimi Jamison, 63, lead singer of the 80′s rock bands Cobra and Survivor, died in his home on Sunday night after suffering a heart attack. Jamison’s booking manager Sally Irwin has confirmed the report.

Survivor is an American hard and soft rock band that formed in Chicago in 1978 known for its double platinum-certified 1982 hit “Eye of the Tiger,” the theme song for the motion picture Rocky III (US number 1 for 6 weeks).

In the early 1980s Jamison was a member of the rock band Cobra. When the band dissolved he was invited to join Survivor and became its lead singer for from 1984 until 1988, leading the band in hits like “The Moment of Truth” from “The Karate Kid,” “Is This Love,” and from “Rocky IV,” “Burning Heart”. He recorded the track “I’m Always Here,” as a solo artist, the theme song for the TV series “Baywatch.”

Survivor recorded three albums with Jamison, “Vital Signs” in 1984, “When Seconds Count” in 1986 and “Too Hot to Sleep” in 1988. In 1989, Survivor disbanded but reformed in 1993 with David Bickler, the original lead singer. In 2000 Jamison rejoined the band for another six years.

Family attorney Jeff Ward released the following statement:

“This afternoon renowned musical performer and lead singer of SURVIVOR Jimi Jamison passed away at his home in Memphis, Tennessee. Jimi was a friend to everyone he met. He was a loving father and grandfather and was always a person who valued people more than anything else. The family has asked for privacy during this extremely difficult time. In lieu of any demonstrations of sympathy, the family has requested that donations be made to Jimi’s favorite charity, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.”

The band had performed in Morgan Hill, California on August 30 and is scheduled to begin another tour on September 12 in Parker, Colorado.
