Trending: Maya Angelou, 'Phenomenal Woman' - The Star-Ledger

"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."

"Phenomenal Woman."

With these titles and others, the world remembered Maya Angelou this week. Both her poetry and name trended internationally on news of her death Wednesday, at age 86.

Though Angelou's passing was first reported in the morning, her poem "Phenomenal Woman" still held strong in the trends by evening, with many who mourned Angelou — also an actress and director — bestowing the title upon the poet herself.

More than 2 million Google searches were devoted to Angelou, who became widely known for her 1969 autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." The poet maintained a presence on social media until shortly before her death.

Among Angelou's last tweets (@DrMayaAngelou) was a message about the group of schoolgirls kidnapped in Nigeria.

"Our future is threatened by the robbing of these young women's future," she tweeted on May 7. "We must have our darlings back so that we can help them to heal."

On April 16, the multi-hyphenate talent quoted herself:

"I agreed a long time ago, I would not live at any cost," she posted. "If I am moved or forced away from what I think is the right thing, I will not do it."

In the headlines

Former PBS children's series "Reading Rainbow" entered trends on news that LeVar Burton had launched a KickStarter campaign to bring the program back to life, this time in classrooms. Another goal of the campaign: to reach "every web-connected child."

Burton's $1 million ask was swiftly fulfilled. Maybe it had something to do with the prizes involved. Perks of donating money included dinner with Burton and a chance to wear his visor from "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

But the week began with tragedy. As families settled into their Memorial Day weekends, and many remembered those lost in battle, more reason for sorrow arrived. A shooting and stabbing last Friday night left six people dead and injured 13 near the University of California, Santa Barbara in Isla Vista, Calif.

Police said Elliot Rodger, 22, carried out the attacks before killing himself. Following the release of his identity — his father, Peter, is known for being the assistant director of "The Hunger Games" — Rodger became the subject of more than a million searches.

Though later removed from YouTube, Rodger had posted videos before the attack in which he expressed hatred for his roommates and women who he blamed for his virginity. He had also written a autobiographical manifesto called "My Twisted World."

On Tuesday, Joe the Plumber, whose real name is Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, trended globally for comments he made in an "open letter" on BarbWire.com to parents of the shooting victims.

"Your dead kids don't trump my Constitutional rights," he wrote, in direct response to Richard Martinez, a father who spoke out and blamed his son Christopher's death in the shooting on politicians and the NRA.

"Why did Chris die?" an emotional, forceful Martinez said, during a press conference. "Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA. They talk about gun rights. What about Chris' right to live?"

On the lighter side of the trends, (divorced) actor Bill Murray got some attention for appearing in a bachelor party video which made the rounds after he deigned to give the young men some marriage advice. The key, Murray told the bachelors: use extensive travel to test your bond. If it still holds, then get married.

Meanwhile Kanye West and Kim Kardashian were all over Twitter last Saturday after their wedding in Florence, Italy. Kardashian netted the most Google attention, however, receiving more than half a million searches that day.

"My Big Fat Greek Wedding" trended Tuesday on word of a sequel to the successful 2002 romantic comedy in the works, with star and writer Nia Vardalos returning alongside John Corbett, her romantic lead.

"TI and Floyd Mayweather" was a top search Sunday, after a TMZ report — with video — of a fight between the rapper and boxer at a Fatburger in Las Vegas.

The trailer for This Is Where I Leave You, an ensemble comedy with a cast of A-listers, has hit the web. The Warner Bros. film was directed by Night at the Museum helmer Shawn Levy.

In the movie, the dysfunctional Altman family reconnects after hearing about the death of their father. Jane Fonda is the matriarch and she invites her children - played by Jason Bateman, Corey Stoll, Tina Fey and Adam Driver - back to their home. Each of them has their own problems, including Bateman who has just discovered that his wife is sleeping with his boss. The children are also horrified to see that their mother has gotten a boob job. Insanity ensues.

This Is Where I Leave You is scheduled for release on Sept. 12. It is based on the book by Jonathan Topper.

According to USA Today, to promote the movie, Levy, Fey, Batman and Topper appeared at the first BookCon in New York City Friday. The audience was shown three scenes from the film.

“I'm going to keep bringing movie stars on book tour. I don't get these kinds of crowds,” Topper joked.

This will never happen.

Oh come now, he just teasing. Breaking Bad's ending was perfect, no need to keep him alive.

Better Call Saul is a prequel, so even if WW returns it wouldn't be in that series.

Storm at Charlize media 'rape' claim - Belfast Telegraph

Backlash: Ms Theron compared media intrusion to rape

Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron has faced a barrage of criticism after she compared media intrusion of her life with rape.

The star, who has been photographed several times since she arrived in the UK to promote her new film A Million Ways To Die In The West, made the comments when asked by Sky News if she ever Googled herself.

She told the channel: "I don't do that, so that's my saving grace. When you start living in that world, and doing that, you start, I guess, feeling raped."

Asked by the interviewer if she felt that strongly about the issue, she said: "Well, you know, when it comes to your son and your private life. Maybe that's just me.

"Some people might relish all that stuff but there are certain things in my life that I think of as very sacred." South African-born Theron, who won the leading actress Oscar in 2003 for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos, runs her own anti-HIV project in Africa and has taken part in campaigns against sexual violence.

In 1999 she filmed an advert for the Real Men Don't Rape campaign in her native South Africa where she told viewers that every 26 seconds a woman is raped in the country.

Katie Russell, a spokeswoman for sexual violence charity Rape Crisis in England and Wales, said: "We are concerned when anyone uses rape as a metaphor for less serious issues and uses the language around sexual violence casually because it trivialises sexual violence and it fails to acknowledge what is a very serious crime.

"What is particularly surprising is that this case does not come out of ignorance as Charlize Theron has been involved in campaigns around rape and sexual violence so she should understand that when she speaks there will be a huge number of victims of sexual violence among her audience."

The actress also came under fire online for her comments, with Twitter users lining up to criticise her, with one writing: "How could you say Press invasion is like rape? Think rape victims would disagree."

Another, who tweets as erin-katie, said: "You need to look at your choice of words. Disgusting, Charlize Theron, get a grip."

Twilight star Kristen Stewart was forced to apologise when she made similar remarks in 2010 in an interview with Elle magazine.

Can Mariah Carey's Vocals Shatter Glass? Check Out This Vintage Clip To Find ... - MTV.com

There is one undeniable fact about Mariah Carey: her voice is a wonderland. It has been for, like, well, ever. From the first time we met her in 1990 until her just-released 14th studio album, Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse , Carey has always mesmerized us with her incredible five-ocatve range.

Back in 1993 when she was promoting her third album, Music Box, MTV News sat down with Carey to discuss her signature upper range, you know, the one that makes your dog’s ears perk up and leaves you saying, “wow.”

For Mariah, though, that rare high register is, well, just how she does it. “It’s just a part of my voice,” she said at the time. “Some people like it, some people don’t like it. I enjoy singing in that register and it’s totally a part of me and it’s something that I’ve always done.” She hadn’t busted glass with it at that point, but she did open a garage door with her vocals. So that’s not nothin’.

Man who accosted Brad Pitt ordered to stay away from red carpets - Fox News

Brad Pitt Accoster ap.jpg

May 30, 2014. Vitalii Sediuk, from Ukraine, is led into the courtroom in Los Angeles Superior Court Friday, May 30, 2014, in Los Angeles. Sediuk faces four misdemeanor charges in connection with an alleged May 28 attack on actor Brad Pitt at a Los Angeles movie premiere. The Associated Press

A man who accosted Brad Pitt on a red carpet pleaded no contest to battery Friday and was ordered to stay away from the actor and Hollywood red carpet events.

Vitalii Sediuk entered the plea during a court appearance Friday afternoon, two days after he leaped from a fan area and made contact with Pitt at the "Maleficent" premiere. He was sentenced to three years of probation and attend a year's worth of psychological counseling.

Sediuk, 25, was also ordered to stay away from Pitt's partner Angelina Jolie and stay 500 yards away from the Hollywood block where movie premieres and the Academy Awards are hosted. He was also ordered to stay away from LA Live, a downtown entertainment complex where Sediuk crashed the Grammy Awards in 2013.

He was charged earlier Friday with four misdemeanors, including assault and two counts governing conduct at sporting and entertainment events. He also pleaded no contest to unlawful activity at a sporting or entertainment event and the remaining counts were dropped.

Sediuk is a former journalist for the Ukrainian television station 1+1, which fired him roughly three weeks ago.

He has been jailed since Wednesday night and appeared in court in the sport coat and jeans he wore to the "Maleficent" premiere, which stars Jolie. He smiled at times during the hearing and politely answered questions from a judge. His hands remained cuffed for the hearing, and the right sleeve of his sport coat was ripped.

Sediuk is expected to be released from custody Friday afternoon. His attorney Anthony Willoughby said he expected the stay-away orders against his client to be lifted after a year if his client behaves.

Sediuk's antics have repeatedly brought him too close for comfort to Hollywood's elite. In 2011, Sediuk presented Madonna with a bouquet of hydrangeas at the 2011 Venice Film Festival, prompting the singer to express her disgust for the flowers. The following year, he attempted to kiss Smith on the mouth on a red carpet in Moscow, prompting a slap from the actor.

In 2013 he grabbed a microphone before Adele accepted a Grammy Award, which led to Sediuk's arrest. He later pleaded no contest to trespassing and earned him a three-year probation sentence.

He hugged Bradley Cooper's crotch earlier this year at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and streaked down a runway in a G-string at a show during February's Fashion Week in New York City. No charges were filed after either incident.
